Fantasy Football 2008: Week 10
Let’s Crunch Some Numbers
By Ric Atkinson

Sometimes we spend so much time looking at players and teams that we forget that when everything is said and done fantasy football is a stats game. Stats are what separate the winners and losers. Stats give a very clear picture of what happened in the past, but they can also be a tool to help us make more accurate predictions about what is going to happen in the future. Of course the larger the sample of data that makes up the stats the more information we can pull out of them. Now with nine weeks worth of data piled up we’d be nuts not to take advantage of the info that’s out there. Let’s take a look at some of the valuable stuff:

Teams that have allowed the most fantasy points to Quarterbacks each week:
1. Detroit Lions (17.4 points per week)
2. San Diego Chargers (16.4 points per week)
3. Seattle Seahawks (16.3 points per week)
4. St. Louis Rams (15.1 points per week)
5. Denver Broncos (14.9 points per week)
6. Arizona Cardinals (14.8 points per week)
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (14.6 points per week)
8. Houston Texans (14.6 points per week)
9. Oakland Raiders (14.6 points per week)
10. Miami Dolphins (14.3 points per week)

Teams that have allowed the fewest fantasy points to Quarterbacks each week:
1. Indianapolis Colts (6.8 points per week)
2. Tennessee Titans (8.0 points per week)
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (8.4 points per week)
4. New York Giants (9.3 points per week)
5. Philadelphia Eagles (9.4 points per week)
6. Carolina Panthers (9.9 points per week)
7. Green Bay Packers (9.9 points per week)
8. Baltimore Ravens (10.4 points per week)
9. Buffalo Bills (11 points per week)
10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11.1 points per week)

No surprise that the Lions top the worst list, but it is kind of a surprise to see the Chargers and the Jaguars on there. Interesting that the Colts and Titans top the toughest list for completely different reasons. The Titans are there because they play really good pass defense. The Colts are there because their run defense is so bad nobody has to pass on them.

Teams that have allowed the most fantasy points to a Tight End each week:
1. San Diego Chargers (11.1 points per week)
2. New York Jets (9.5 points per week)
3. Philadelphia Eagles (7.8 points per week)
4. Detroit Lions (7.4 points per week)
5. Denver Broncos (6.6 points per week)
6. Oakland Raiders (6.6 points per week)
7. Atlanta Falcons (6.5 points per week)
8. Green Bay Packers (6.4 points per week)
9. Tennessee Titans (6.4 points per week)
10. Minnesota Vikings (6.4 points per week)

Teams that have allowed the fewest fantasy points to a Tight End each week:
1. San Francisco 49ers (2.4 points per week)
2. Miami Dolphins (2.5 points per week)
3. Washington Redskins (2.7 points per week)
4. Buffalo Bills (3.0 points per week)
5. New York Giants (3.1 points per week)
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3.3 points per week)
7. Cleveland Browns (3.4 points per week)
8. Dallas Cowboys (3.7 points per week)
9. Cincinnati Bengals (3.9 points per week)
10. Kansas City Chiefs (4.0 points per week)

It’s really hard to explain some of these numbers at first glance, as tight ends and quarterbacks seem to have in inverse relationship. Take a stingy defense like Philadelphia that blitzes heavily, in that instance the hot read or safety valve is likely the tight end or running back. There could be a correlation between blitzing teams and tight end production. The other possibilty is that tough run defenses force the offense to pass in the red zone, when a tight end becomes a main target in the passing game. The Eagles, Titans, and Vikings are all very stingy against the run. Lastly, some defenses are just bad across the board (Detroit, San Diego, Denver). As we bring running backs and wide receivers into the fold, we will expand on these theories.

Waiver Wire Wonder:
RB Tim Hightower, Cardinals

He’s moved past the role of TD vulture and has now taken over the starting spot in Arizona. Hightower looks like the real deal in a high-octane offense. If he’s available in your league pick him up. You won’t regret it. Depending on how bad you need a running back, he probably wouldn't cost much in a trade if you act quickly.

Sleeper Of The Week:

My sleeper of the week is another Cardinal. Actually it’s more than one Cardinal; it’s their D/ST. They have a great match up at home against the 49ers. Things are ugly in San Fran right now, and they won’t get any better this week.

That’s it for now. Be sure to check back next week when we’ll look at team stats against running backs and wide receivers. Until then, remember: always start your studs.
