Fantasy Football 2008: Week 7
By Ric Atkinson

And the hits just keep on coming. Add Tony Romo, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselbeck, and Joseph Addai to the growing list of key fantasy players who are injured. But with every injury comes opportunity. Act fast and these opportunities could make or break your fantasy season.

Last week we told you that the Lions were shopping Roy Williams. They found a buyer in Dallas that was willing to pay too much. Williams owners should be very happy about this move though. His value had pretty much hit rock bottom in Detroit but gets a big bump with the move to Big D. TO and Jason Witten owners should be concerned about this move however. There are only so many catches in a game and Williams will get more looks than Patrick Crayton was getting. If that wasn’t enough to concern TO and Witten owners, Romo’s injury has to weigh pretty heavy on their minds as well. Brad Johnson is an adequate backup but he’s got his limitations.

Looking for the big winner in all this? Look no further than Marion Barber. The Cowboys should run the ball more during Romo’s absence, and with Felix Jones having hamstring issues Barber will be the man getting almost all the carries. Even with his limitations, Brad Johnson now becomes a big waiver wire pickup in a lot of leagues. If you are a Romo owner, you’d be crazy not to pick Johnson up as a safety measure.

Looking for a sleeper QB option for this week? Take a look at Kerry Collins against the Chiefs and their 29th rated defense. Matt Schaub also has a great matchup against the woeful Lions and their 32nd rated defense.

Looking for a sleeper RB option for this week? Take a look a Mewelde Moore. Fast Willie Parker re-aggravated his knee injury when he stepped in a hole during Wednesday’s practice. Moore looks like a great start against the Bengals. Keep in mind the struggling Thomas Jones put up 25 against these same Bengals last week.

Another running back option to keep in mind is Dominic Rhodes. Rhodes steps into the starters roll while Joseph Addai’s hamstring heals. He gets a good matchup this week against the Packers 27th rated rushing defense. Watching the Colts closely, they run in the red zone more than people realize. Addai has 4 rushing touchdowns and all were runs of 3 yards or less. Rhodes should get some goaline scores just by virtue of being the starter for the Colts.

Addai’s injury also creates a great buy low scenario. You might want to make a low ball offer to the Addai owner in your league. The Colts schedule looks very favorable over the last six weeks of the season. Addai could be the key to a great fantasy playoff run.

Looks like Larry Johnson is moving into full melt down mode. The Chiefs suspended LJ for this weeks game. This comes on top of the news that LJ is facing assault charges, but according to Herm Edwards the suspension is not related to the assault charges.

The best kept secret in the NFL: Andre Johnson is the best wide receiver in the league right now. Slaving away in near anonymity with the Texans, he just keeps getting better and better. Look for him to have another big week against the Lions.

Let’s take a look in the old mailbag:

Mark in Vegas writes: “Is Phillip Rivers going to keep putting up the kind of numbers he has given me so far this year?”

I just don’t see it happening. Right now he is the one of the top scoring players in most fantasy leagues. But I really think defenses will stop loading up on the run to stop LT and start paying more attention to the Chargers passing game. So far, the Chargers gameplan is to attack down the field early because they know the defense is keying on Tomlinson. Coincidentally, they aren’t just backing up the secondary but actually completing bombs down the field to Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson. That said, I do see Rivers being a top fantasy QB from here on out. Because of that, I don’t see him as a sell high guy. Keep him and enjoy the numbers he’ll give you, even if they don’t stay quite as this rate.

Randy in Oakland asked: “How does the Roy Williams trade effect Calvin Johnson’s value?”

This could go either way. Johnson is now the only real star in Detroit now. They simply have to find new ways to get him the ball. They don’t really have any other way to go. The downside for Johnson is that defense can completely gear everything toward containing him. Combine that with the loss of Jon Kitna for the rest of the season and things could be really tough for Megatron. The key factor is to take notice of the Lions running game, as that could allow for opportunities to attack down the field. If they lean on Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson with solid results, that balance could keep opposing defenses from allocating 3 people to Calvin Johnson. If not, Johnson could have a hard time making big plays. Personally I tend to expect the worst. If I owned Johnson, I’d be looking to trade him right now.

Well, that’s it for this week. Thanks for reading, and remember: Always start your studs.
