Fantasy Football 2008: Week 5
By Ric Atkinson

So you lost one of your key players to injury. Where do you go? What do you do? Don’t Panic. We’ve got your answer right here. Here’s my list of great sleeper pickups that can carry you for a week or two…or maybe even longer.

I’ll also take you through and give you some guys to target in terms of making a trade. Now is the time to make that big trade to swing your team back into contention or put you over the top.

Waiver Wire Pickups:

Steve Beaston – WR – Arizona:
Anquan Boldin is one of the toughest guys in the league, but the hit he took last week would take anyone out of the lineup of a week or two. Beaston looks like a great fill in player until Boldin gets back, and has great value in leagues that count return yards even when Boldin returns.

Matt Flynn – QB – Green Bay:
It’s looking more and more like Aaron Rogers will miss two or three weeks with his shoulder injury. Flynn will step into the QB spot and has some pretty good matchups coming up (vs Atlanta, @ Seattle, vs Indy). **Proceed with caution and watch the injury reports closely as the week goes on.

Lance Moore – WR – New Orleans:
In Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey’s absence, Moore has become Drew Brees’ go to guy in the Saints high powered offense. Moore looks like the man until Colston returns and the solid #2 WR in New Orleans afterwards. This guy is someone that could help your team for the rest of the year.

Deuce McAllister – RB – New Orleans:
He looked like the old Deuce last week. Best case scenario the Saints use McAllister to really establish a running game. Worst case he gets the entire Saints’ goaline carries and becomes a first rate TD vulture. Don’t get discouraged if he doesn’t have a big game against a tough Viking run defense this Monday night, as that isn’t necessarily a true indication of how good he will be the rest of this season.

Correll Buckhalter – RB – Philadelphia:
If you own Brian Westbrook you need to find a place for Buckhalter on your roster. If Westy is again unable to go this week, Buckhalter will be an excellent fill in. Otherwise he’s almost a necessary handcuff for the rest of the season for Westbrook owners.

Steve Slaton – RB – Houston:
In his first career start, Slaton scored a TD and had over 100 combined yards against a pretty solid Jacksonville defense. Slaton’s 8 catches makes him even more valuable in points-per-reception leagues. He has a pretty solid matchup this week against a weak Indy run defense.

Mewelde Moore – RB – Pittsburg:
This one is probably only a one week solution to any RB problem you may have, but look for Moore to be the Steelers primary option at RB this week with Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall both unable to play.

Players To Target:

At this point, there are several key guys that you can grab right now at a bargain price. Every year, guys get off to great starts and stumble down the stretch. Likewise, guys get off to slow starts then catchs fire that half of the season. This year will be no different.

WR Andre Johnson, Texans
The Texans do two things that bode well for Johnson in terms of getting on track: they give up a million points and pass a lot. They have given up at least 30 points every game and average just under 37 pass attempts a game. Johnson will start to make plays, don't worry.

QB Peyton Manning, Colts
This sounds odd but, with Manning not putting huge numbers yet, his trade value is down. The offensive line is getting healthy again and Dallas Clark is back from injury. Expect the numbers for Manning to be back as well.

QB Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks
The Seahawks are finally getting healthy at wide receiver and just had their bye week. I expect some continuity to develop this week and for the passing game to get on track.

RB Julius Jones, Seahawks
Basically, I think the Seahawks offense as a whole will start to put up more points from here on out. Jones has been very good so far and that should continue.

RB Earnest Graham, Bucs
Take away that odd game against the Bears and Graham is averaging over 7 yards a carry. Dunn is getting carries and touches, but the red zone is all Graham. He is playing at a high level right now.

WR Steve Smith, Panthers
I'm going to let you in on a secret, the Panthers are good. They run, pass, and defend. With the committment to the running game, it opens up big play opportunities for Smith. Get him now while his value is low.

Randy Moss, Patriots
If he doesn't perform well this week, then I may change my opinion but I have to believe that the Patriots have figured some things out over the bye week. That should include finding ways to get Moss the ball.

Abandon Ship:

QB Derek Anderson, Browns
QB Carson Palmer, Bengals
QB Marc Bulger, Rams
RB Jamal Lewis, Browns
RB Thomas Jones, Jets
RB Pierre Thomas, Saints
WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh, Bengals
WR Tory Holt, Rams
WR Roy Williams, Lions

Let’s see what we have in the old mail-bag this week:

Jake in Kansas City wrote: I’m 0-4 in a league I won last year. I really need a win this week so which two running back do I start Jonathon Stewart, Edgerrin James, Chris Perry, or Brandon Jacobs?

I’d go with Stewart and Jacobs. The Bengals should try to throw the ball against the Cowboy’s questionable secondary limiting Perry’s chances and Edge isn’t getting enough of the goaline carries for the Cardinals to be consistent each week. Meanwhile Stewart and Jacobs face inferior teams at home this week. I look for both of them to get lots of carries in blowout wins.

Martin in St Louis asked: I’m depending on Kurt Warner at QB. Should I be worried about Matt Lienart taking over as the starter in the near future?

I’m also a Warner owner, and at this point I’m taking Ken Whisenhunt at his word when he says Warner is his guy. As long as Arizona has a shot at making the playoffs I expect Warner to keep the job. And when I consider how week the NFC West is this year, I think the Cardinals will have a shot very deep into the season.

Please send me your questions for next week and I’ll be sure to answer them right here. Click Here To Submit A Question.

That’s it for this week. Good luck, and remember to always start your studs.
