2008 Fantasy Preview: Wide Receivers
By Ron Jumper
With wide receivers, I think there is more variables involved then any other Fantasy position. No other position is more up and down on a weekly basis, as well as a yearly basis, like those crazy wide receivers. Also, looking at the final numbers from last year don’t really tell the whole story because some had a few big games and were awful the rest of the time (Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson), others started off slow (Marques Colston), and others missed substantial time due to injury (Andre Johnson). Putting all that information into context and examining all the other factors that usually go into Fantasy Rankings, should help give a more accurate forecast of 2008.
My rankings (surprise, surprise) are much different than everywhere else. I’m not big on taking risk/reward picks at WR, as there is already enough risk involved with wideouts as it is. If teams have a bad QB situation, off-the-field troubles, or are coming off a major injury, I’m going to examine the situation much more closely than I would a running back or tight end.
Here goes nothing…
Wide Receivers:
1. Randy Moss, Patriots: Don’t expect anywhere near the season he had last year, as that just really isn’t possible. However, in this offense, a bad year for him is still a top-10 Fantasy WR season. He is always going to have those monster games where he has 200+ yards and 2-3 TDs a few times a year.
2. Reggie Wayne, Colts: Safe and steady, rest easy if he lands on your roster.
3. Marques Colston, Saints: A breakout year is coming for Colston, as the rule of three applies (as in year 3). Colston also was outstanding in the last 10 games (140 points), leading me to believe he can do it for an entire season as long as the Saints don’t get off to a rocky start again.
4. Andre Johnson, Texans: This guy was outstanding in the 9 games he played in last year. Look for him and Schaub to have a breakout season if they can stay healthy.
5. Terrell Owens, Cowboys: I’m not loving Owens this season, as he is getting old (34). He was also not as consistent as I would like: season low totals of 2, 2, 3, 3 in 2007. He will have a couple of big games for you at some point, just maybe not enough to win your league.
6. Braylon Edwards, Browns: It isn’t that I hate Edwards, it is more that I need to be sure about his QB Derek Anderson. I always worry about those one-hit wonders, as Anderson may join that list.
7. Torry Holt, Rams: Another safe and steady wideout.
8. Santonio Holmes, Steelers: Expect Holmes to break his way into the top Fantasy WRs. Holmes averaged a league best 18.1 ypc. Keep in mind he missed 3 games last season, so his totals don’t look as impressive.
9. Plaxico Burress, Giants: Not a big fan, but he is such a good red zone target that he will always have solid TD numbers.
10. Brandon Marshall, Broncos: He is Jay Cutler’s top target and he will be thrown to all the time. A perfect example of why Fantasy shouldn’t be looked at like real football. Is Marshall a top 10 NFL WR talent? Nope. Is he a top 10 Fantasy WR? I think so.
**Picks 11-15 are all guys capable of finishing in the top 5 but have risks that make me want them as my #2 WR instead of as my #1. It could be QB issues, injuries, or what have you, but be cautious of these next 5 guys.
11. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals 12. Steve Smith, Panthers 13. TJ Houshmandzadeh, Bengals 14. Chad Johnson, Bengals 15. Marvin Harrison, Colts
Best Of The Rest:
16. Wes Welker, Patriots 17. Greg Jennings, Packers 18. Anquan Boldin, Cardinals 19. Roy Williams, Lions 20. Lee Evans, Bills 21. Joey Galloway, Bucs 22. Hines Ward, Steelers 23. Dwayne Bowe, Chiefs 24. Calvin Johnson, Lions 25. Chris Chambers, Chargers
