2008 Fantasy Preview: Tight Ends
By Ric Atkinson
Some fantasy football owners view the tight end as a necessary evil. Other owners are willing to sacrifice a very early draft pick to gain a clear advantage at the position. I’d say the best strategy falls somewhere in between. Draft a TE too early and you’ll end up weakening your teams overall depth at running back or wide receiver. Wait too late and you’ll find yourself giving up points every week at the position.
Here’s my take on this year’s crop of fantasy Tight ends:
Tight Ends
1. Jason Witten, Cowboys When you get Witten you are getting a huge cog in one of the leagues most explosive offenses. Last year it was clear that Witten became Tony Romo’s security blanket. With the Cowboys still looking for a good option to fill their #2 WR position, Witten should have another great year.
2. Antonio Gates, Chargers Gates is a super talent and a proven fantasy powerhouse. But he comes into this season with some serious injury questions. His surgically repaired toe is reportedly about 60% to 70% right now. There is even some talk that he could start the season on the physically unable to perform list. Keep a close eye on his situation before you use an early pick on him.
3. Kellen Winslow, Browns Last year, free of injury, we began to see the results match the expectations. Much like Witten, Winslow is the #2 option in Cleveland’s improved passing game. I’m looking for him to continue to progress and have a great fantasy impact.
4. Tony Gonzales, Chiefs One year the seemingly ageless Gonzo is going to be too old. This isn’t the year. He’s the greatest pass-catching TE in history, and he is still the most stable piece in the Chief’s passing game. He is a solid pick that should be available in the middle rounds of most drafts.
5. Chris Cooley, Redskins Another year, another new offensive coordinator in Washington. This time the ‘Skins will try the West Coast offense. Cooley is the guy that should benefit the most from the new scheme. He’s always been a solid red zone threat, now he should be targeted more often on the rest of the field.
6. Dallas Clark, Colts Clark has a solid role in the Colts offense. Unfortunately he’s surrounded by other talented options. In most situations, he is option #4 behind Addai, Wayne, and Harrison. Fortunately option #4 in the Colt’s offense will still get quite a few chances.
7. Jeremy Shockey, Giants Shockey’s move out of New York was good for him. His move to the Saints really helps his fantasy value. It remains to be seen if he can keep his attitude in check and be a good teammate over the long haul. Hopefully for Fantasy owners, there will be a honeymoon period this year that will allow Shockey to use his considerable talents.
8. Owen Daniels, Texans This guy is very quietly becoming a big time player. He’s primed for a breakout year. A good athlete with great hands, he’s the #2 option in Houston’s passing game. He is a great late round pickup.
9. Vernon Davis, 49ers A superfreak, that seems to be hurt all the time. It’s really do or die time for him. The 49ers new Mike Martz powered offense should give Davis a chance to show what he can do. He has got all the tools in the world, but can he do anything with them? Word has it that he has started to flourish under the tutelage of Mike Martz.
10. Alge Crumpler, Titans A new team is just what the doctor ordered for Crumpler. He’s a guy that could be come the option that Vince Young can depend on when the chips are down. A veteran player that knows how to get open when Young is improvising. Seems like a great fit to me.
Best of the rest:
11. Todd Heap, Ravens 12. Heath Miller, Steelers 13. Greg Olsen, Bears 14. Ben Watson, Patriots 15. Tony Scheffler, Broncos 16. LJ Smith, Eagles
