Sharing My Bracket
By Ron Jumper
I have been following the NCAA tournament all along with Jumpology, but I just wanted to add something else before the tournament got underway. This lead to me deciding to put my bracket up on the site and give analysis to why I think it will come true. This could serve as a helpful tool for you, as I got all 4 Final Four teams correct last season and picked both VCU over Duke and Winthrop over Notre Dame as upsets in the first round. So I have some idea what I'm talking about. Here goes nothing:
East:
First Round:
1 UNC vs. Play-In Winner Let's let common sense take over here...UNC
8 Indiana vs. 9 Arkansas The Hoosiers faded down the stretch, while the Hogs finished strong. Arkansas
5 Notre Dame vs. 12 George Mason The Patriots have a senior-laden team primed for a run. George Mason
4 Washington State vs. 13 Winthrop The Cougars are so solid, despite lacking athleticism. WSU
6 Oklahoma vs. 11 St. Joe's I'm just not sold on the Sooners. St. Joe's
3 Louisville vs. 14 Boise State Cardinals are just simply a lot better. Cards
7 Butler vs. 10 South Alabama Don't ever doubt Mike Green and A.J. Graves. Butler
2 Tennessee vs. 15 American No upset happening here. Vols
Second Round:
1 UNC vs. 9 Arkansas UNC in Raleigh, say goodnight Hogs. UNC
12 George Mason vs. 4 Washington State The Patriots keep on winning. George Mason
11 St. Joe's vs. 3 Louisville Pitino will have his team ready to play. Louisville
7 Butler vs. 2 Tennessee I hate that someone has to lose this game. Vols
Sweet 16
1 UNC vs. 12 George Mason The Tar Heels just have too much size and athleticism. UNC
3 Louisville vs. 2 Tennessee These teams are similar, but Vols get by thanks to superior depth and guard play. Vols
Elite 8
1 UNC vs. 2 Tennessee The Vols have struggled against teams that have great post play and that rebound well. The Tar Heels have the most dominant post player in the nation in Tyler Hansborough and they just seem to be on a mission. I was hoping to see these two teams in the championship game, but they have to meet here. UNC
Midwest
First Round:
1 Kansas vs. 16 Portland State No upset here. Kansas
8 UNLV vs. 9 Kent State Similar styles, but Kent State is better. Kent State
5 Clemson vs. 12 Villanova The Tigers have been playing great, while Nova is lucky to be in. Clemson
4 Vanderbilt vs. 13 Siena This game comes down to the wire, but A.J. Ogilvy is the difference. Vandy
6 USC vs. 11 Kansas State Trojans have more complete team, not just Mayo. USC
3 Wisconsin vs. 14 CSFU Badgers win easy here. Wisconsin
7 Gonzaga vs. 10 Davidson Tough to decide, but I'm taking the upset. Davidson
2 Georgetown vs. 15 UMBC UMBC is a nice story, but Hoyas are too good. Georgetown
Second Round:
1 Kansas vs. 9 Kent State Jayhawks get by, but closer than the experts think. Kansas
5 Clemson vs. 4 Vanderbilt Tigers played as good as anyone in the country down the stretch. Clemson
6 USC vs. 3 Wisconsin Mayo leads Trojans past overrated Badgers squad. USC
10 Davidson vs. 2 Georgetown Hoyas have too much size and defend so well. Georgetown
Sweet 16:
1 Kansas vs. 5 Clemson This game comes down to wire, where Tigers struggle due to free throw shooting and half-court execution. Kansas
6 USC vs. 2 Georgetown Hoyas size and athleticism will bother Mayo. Georgetown
Elite 8:
1 Kansas vs. 2 Georgetown Kansas is so deep and so talented, but I think they lack a true “back-to-the-basket” player and leader from the point guard position. In crunch time, going inside to Roy Hibbert and Jonathon Wallace directing traffic will be the difference. Georgetown
South:
First Round:
1 Memphis vs. 16 Texas-Arlington This will be ugly… Memphis
8 Mississippi State vs. 9 Oregon Oregon will present a difficult matchup for MSU. Oregon
5 Michigan State vs. 12 Temple Izzo will have his team prepared and ready to go. MSU
4 Pittsburgh vs. 13 Oral Roberts Pitt gets a low-scoring, ugly win. Pitt
6 Marquette vs. 11 Kentucky Kentucky out-manned and lacking a post presence. Marquette
3 Stanford vs. 14 Cornell The Lopez twins are just too much for the Ivy League winners. Stanford
7 Miami (FL) vs. 10 St. Mary’s Tough game to call, expect a close game. St. Mary’s
2 Texas vs. 15 Austin Peay Texas just too talented…Texas
Second Round:
1 Memphis vs. 9 Oregon Memphis excels at a fast pace and should outrun Ducks. Memphis
5 Michigan State vs. 4 Pitt Pitt is just too physical and experienced. Pitt
6 Marquette vs. 3 Stanford Size against speed, I’ll take speed. Marquette
10 St. Mary’s vs. 2 Texas Longhorns should fluster Gaels freshman PG Mills. Texas
Sweet 16:
1 Memphis vs. 4 Pitt Memphis is a talented bunch, but Pitt is a more complete team that can dominate you physically. Pitt
6 Marquette vs. 2 Texas With a great point guard matchup, I think the role players will be the difference. Marquette
Elite 8:
4 Pittsburgh vs. 6 Marquette In a matchup of similar Big East clubs, this game could really go either way but I’m going to give the edge to the team with the better post presence. Pitt
West:
First Round:
1 UCLA vs. 16 Mississippi Valley State Not a hard choice here... UCLA
8 BYU vs. 9 Texas A&M Aggies faded down the stretch. BYU
5 Drake vs. 12 Western Kentucky Drake ready to make a run. Drake
4 UConn vs. 13 San Diego SD is just outmanned here. UConn
6 Purdue vs. 11 Baylor Purdue just knows how to win. Purdue
3 Xavier vs. 14 Georgia Bulldogs magical run comes to an end. Xavier
7 West Virginia vs. 10 Arizona Arizona has been inconsistent all year long. WVU
2 Duke vs. 15 Belmont Blue Devils are surprisingly under the radar. Duke
Second Round:
1 UCLA vs. 8 BYU Bruins just too physical and deep inside. UCLA
5 Drake vs. 4 UConn Drake is for real. Believe me. Drake
6 Purdue vs. 3 Xavier Musketeers are scrappy as well, but they can also light it up. Xavier
7 West Virginia vs. 2 Duke Similar styles, Duke just does it better. Duke
Sweet 16:
1 UCLA vs. 5 Drake I love Drake, but this is asking a lot against UCLA. UCLA
3 Xavier vs. 2 Duke Again, similar styles but Duke just does it better. Duke
Elite 8
1 UCLA vs. 2 Duke The Bruins are the type of team Duke will struggle against because they score inside and play great defense. Duke will have to shoot lights out from three, but I see them struggling because of UCLA's length at all positions. UCLA
Final Four:
1 UNC vs. 2 Georgetown Revenge is sweet for UNC, as they won't let this game slip away again. Tyler Hansborough looks like a man possessed and this team is feeding off of that. I love Georgetown, but they just don't match up well with the Tar Heels, as UNC has more depth and will make it hard for the Hoyas to play their style. UNC
4 Pitt vs. 1 UCLA A matchup of two very physical teams and UCLA coach Ben Howland's former school. UCLA has a difference maker in Daron Collison that will make all the little plays and Kevin Love should be able to get to the line often against this aggressive Pitt front line. UCLA
National Championship:
1 UNC vs. 1 UCLA This game will be decided by which point guard can control the tempo. If Lawson can speed the game up, UNC will win. If Collison can slow the game down, UCLA should win. I think both teams are loaded and have depth, so it all comes down to tempo and instilling your will on your opponent. I see UNC speeding the game up and neutralizing UCLA's size. Expect Hansborough to beat Love down the floor in transition and for Lawson to make plays because of this. UNC
