2008 Top Prospects: Week 11
By Ron Jumper
I thought I would do this week's article a little bit different. I'm going to take a minute to look at both the Heisman and BCS standings, sprinkling in the top prospects along the way. Besides, it would take nothing short of a miracle to change the top 2 guys on this list.
With the Heisman race really heating up, I have to say I am excited to watch this play out. As of today, it is Dennis Dixon's to lose, as he has a monster game Thursday night against Arizona. How is Arizona a monster game? You may be wondering. Well, most writers won't admit it, but this is probably the first time they will actually watch Dixon play this season. Being on the West Coast, many writers/voters havn't truly taken the time to watch him play an entire game. Crazy, I mean to think they might actually do their job tonight...
The other candidates are Tim Tebow, Darren McFadden, and Chase Daniels. I don't want to hear about Desean Jackson, Matt Ryan, Andre Woodson, or Glenn Dorsey because they have no real shot. If you try to mention Colt Brennan, I might kill you discretely in your sleep. Well, scratch that, I'd probably hire somebody. Who really does their own dirty work anymore these days?
Anyways, enough about me...
I like Tebow but I don't think he has a great shot because he is an underclassmen on a so-so Gators team. His numbers are wonderful, but I don't think it is enough. As for McFadden, he is the best player in the country and should have a pretty good game this week against Mississippi State, despite the improvement of the Bulldogs. The biggest factor for McFadden is that he gets a chance to make a statement against LSU the day after Thanksgiving. It is the big game of the day, as it is always on CBS. It makes or breaks his Heisman hopes though either way. Daniels is a sleeper, much like Dixon was just a few weeks ago. He has the chance to play Kansas and, if they win, play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Title Game. If he plays well in both outings and the Tigers can get wins, look out.
As for the BCS Championship, it is simply begging for a playoff system. If you are in control of the BCS, you are begging for Kansas to lose and LSU/Oklahoma to stay at just 1 loss. If Kansas is undefeated at the end of the regular season, it would be a travesty to not have them in the BCS Title Game. They would have beaten both Missouri and Oklahoma in the process, giving virtually no way to leave them out. Oregon and LSU are currently who would go, but I think LSU still has a long road ahead because of the SEC Championship game. The sleeper in all of this is Missouri, as their only loss was to Oklahoma, but they would get a rematch in the conference championship if they beat Kansas in the regular season finale. While West Virginia still only has 1 loss as well, I just don't see any way they get in over LSU, Oregon, or Oklahoma. Besides, the Mountaineers will be lucky to get past Cincy this weekend.
