Fantasy Football Rundown: Week 8
By Ric Atkinson

What do Tony Romo, Larry Johnson, Willis McGahee, Edgerin James, Terrell Owens, Tony Gonzales, Matt Hassellbeck, Matt Stover, Larry Fitzgerld, the Raven’s defense, Jason Witten, Neil Rackers, the Cowboys defense, Roddy White, Shaun Alexander, Marion Barber III, Kurt Warner, Nick Folks, Todd Heap, Dwayne Bowe, Anqaun Boldin, Julius Jones, and Derrick Mason all have in common? None of them will score any fantasy points this week because it’s their bye week. That’s going to leave a lot of holes in a lot of lineups. Add the key players that are out due to injury and lots of teams will be digging deep on the wavier wire to find that one-week wonder. Here are a few guys I think could be good fill-ins:

QB: Cleo Lemons, Brian Griese, Jay Cutler

RB: DeShaun Foster, Jesse Chapman, LenDale White, Kenton Keith

WR: Issac Bruce, Marty Booker, Darrell Jackson

TE: Owen Daniel, Greg Olsen

D/ST: Lions, Bills, Bucs

There are four words that that strike fear in the heart of every fantasy owner. Those words are: Running Back By Committee. Here’s a quick look at some new developments on that front.

The Colts:
Look for Joseph Addai to lose significant carries to Kenton Keith. Tony Dungy said this week he likes having these two guys share the workload and keeping each other fresh.

The Jaguars:
Maurice Jones-Drew is banged up. Fred Taylor might be ready to have a breakout game with the Jags passing game really struggling.

The Bengals:
Rudi Johnson is going to lose carries to Kenny Watson once he gets healthy. This looks like a real RBBC situation in the making.

The Panthers:
RBBC and no change in sight. Two backs splitting carries.

The Seahawks:
Shaun Alexander seems to be losing more carries to Maurice Morris. While not really a RBBC at this point, it could be headed that way.

Let’s take a look at what showed up in this week’s mailbag:

Tony in Seattle asked “Should I start Steven Jackson this week against Cleveland?”

Unless you’re very deep at running back I think you have to. He’s a fantastic talent on a team that really needs lots of help. He should get plenty of chances both running and catching the ball. He’s a stud and he needs to start.

James in Cleveland asked “How will Garrard's injury impact Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor?”

It seems obvious that the Jags are going to have to run the ball well to have any hope of making the playoffs. I look for teams to load up against the run, but I don’t think that will stop the Jags from trying to grind out games with their running game. I look for both guys to see lots of carries from this point forward. How effective they will be remains to be seen.

Greg in Little Rock asked “If I need a quarterback, is Brian Griese a possible answer?”

I really think he is a good option. With Berrian, Muhammad, Hester, and Olsen the Bear receiving core looks a lot better than their running backs. Griese has put together pretty good fantasy numbers since taking over as the starter. He also has some pretty good looking matchups coming up.

Well that’s it for this week. Remember: Always start your studs.
