Fantasy Football Rundown: Week 7
By Ric Atkinson
This week marks the halfway point for most fantasy leagues. That makes it a good time to hand out some midseason awards.
Fantasy MVP: Tom Brady 21 total TD passes with at least 3 in every game. He is putting up huge numbers. He’s doing it consistently ever week. He’s not making mistakes (2 interceptions for the entire season). He’s been everything you want in a fantasy QB.
Fantasy Rookie of the Year: Adrian Peterson 607 rushing yards, 175 yards receiving, 5 TDs. He’s showing all the signs of being the next great running back in the league. It will be interesting to see how he finishes the grueling NFL season.
Fantasy WRs of the Year : Tie – Randy Moss and TJ Houshmandzadeh – The return of Randy Moss has been unbelievable. He’s playing hard every play, and it shows with 101.7 yards per game and 8 TDs. Houshmandzadeh has quietly put up the same kind of numbers as Moss (101.0 yards per game and 7 TDs in one less game than Moss). He’s scored a TD in every Bengal game this season.
Fantasy Sleeper of the year: Tony Romo Great Fantasy numbers for a guy that was drafted in the middle rounds of almost all fantasy drafts. Honorable Mention – Jason Witten, Dallas Clark
Fantasy Comeback of the year: Ronnie Brown 526 rushing yards, 356 receiving yards, 5 TDs. He’s doing the things the dolphins expected him to do when they drafted him so high.
Biggest Fantasy Injury: Steven Jackson If you used the 2nd pick in the draft to get him you must be feeling the pain right now. The good news is he should be back after the Ram bye week, and the schedule looks very favorable for the rest of the year.
Fantasy Special Teamer of the Year: Devin Hester It’s almost silly how good he is. It’s to the point that you almost expect him to score every time he touches the ball.
Here’s some quick picks for my good plays for the week:
Tony Romo – Vikings are a great run defense but just an average pass defense. Look for all the Cowboys WR/TE to have a good week.
Willis McGahee – The Ravens offensive line should dominate the Bills all game. Looks like a good week for McGahee to start getting some TDs.
Matt Hasselbeck – Any QB playing the Rams is a good play.
New England D/ST – Miami has limited offensive options and NE will take advantage of any team playing their backup QB.
Drew Brees – Look for him to build on last week solid numbers against the hapless Falcons.
Let’s see what came in this weeks mailbag:
Dave in Cleveland asked: “How does the Chris Chambers trade affect his Fantasy Value?”
I think this trade really kills his value. He went from the primary pass receiver in Miami (4th most targeted player in the NFL) to at best a number three option (behind Gates and LT). There is no way he will get the chances with the Chargers that he was getting before. On the flip side I think Marty Booker fantasy value just skyrocketed. Ted Ginn Jr. will also get more looks now.
Antywan in Atlanta asked: "Will Marc Bulger bounce back this week against Seattle?"
I just don’t see it. The Rams O-line is just a mess, and the Seahawks are a pretty solid D. The good news is that the Rams do have a pretty soft schedule coming up so Bulger will make a comeback, I just don’t think it will come this week.
James in Tulsa wrote this one: "Is the Bears defense still a starting Fantasy defense or is Adrian Peterson just that good?"
I like the Bears D/ST because of Hester, but their base D was exposed by Peterson and the Vikings O-line. More than once, some of the Bears key defenders (including Urlacher) were caught out of position. They simply didn’t seem focused. It made me wonder if they aren’t pretty close to mailing it in for the rest of the season. It certainly is something to keep an eye on.
Well, that raps it up for another week. Good luck, and remember: Always start your studs.
