Fantasy Rundown: Week 1
By Ric Atkinson

If you’re trying to find a good defense to play this week look no further than Minnesota. I see the Vikings defense as very underrated. Last year they were ranked 8th in the league in total defense, 1st in terms of rushing yards allowed per game, and 5th in interceptions. This week they are at home against an Atlanta team that obviously has a lot of question marks on the offensive side of the ball. Look for a good score out of the Vikes D/ST this week.

This week’s weird situation:
Last year’s three worst rushing defenses all face teams that are using the dreaded running back-by-committee system:

Indianapolis vs. the Saints: Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush
St. Louis vs. Carolina: DeAngelo Williams and Deshaun Foster
Titans vs. Jacksonville: Fred Taylor, Jones-Drew, and Greg Jones

Just about every player involved in the Colts/Saints game looks like a great play this week. It should be a high scoring shoot-out that will yield a ton of fantasy points. If you’re looking for a sleeper in that game take a look at Saint’s TE Eric Johnson. With his wide receivers a little banged up, Brees may look to his TE more than normal this week.

Last year the Giants gave up the 5th most passing yards in the league. I’m looking for Tony Romo and Terrell Owens to put up big number this week. If Terry Glenn isn’t able to play, look for TO to have a huge game. Jason Witten might also get a bit of a bump in Glenn can’t go.

If Jacoby Jones (WR, Houston) is available on you league’s waiver wire, go pick him up right now. He is 6’3”, 210 lbs and runs a 4.47 forty. He’s looking more and more like this year’s Marques Colston. The Texans still list him as their #3 WR but look for that to change very soon.

If you week depending on Calvin Johnson to be you team’s savior at WR you might want to see this:

Lions coach Rod Marinelli says Calvin Johnson has not earned a starting job yet. “He’s not, yet," Marinelli said. "We’re going to make these guys continue to work to earn. He’s got everything we want. He’s going to be something else." The Lions gave Johnson a bunch of snaps in their preseason finale because they felt he needed to get in football shape. It remains a near lock that Johnson will start in three-receiver sets with Mike Furrey in the slot. Source: Detroit Free Press

That does bring up this question: Has Mike Martz ever used a formation that doesn’t involve three wide receivers?

My Best Plays Of The Week:
Willie Parker vs. Cleveland
Larry Johnson vs. Houston
TO vs. the Giants
Peyton Manning vs. the Saints

My Sleepers Of The Week:
Eric Johnson vs. the Colts
Jacoby Jones vs. KC
Vikings D/ST vs. Atlanta
Phillip Rivers vs. Chicago
