2008 Top Prospects: Week 1
By R.C.

Well, finally football is here. Along with it comes the first of the weekly installments of this piece – so be sure to check back every Tuesday.

A few things to note as you read: first, offensive lineman will not be listed here. We realize how valuable they are and that they typically provide several top picks, but it's just too difficult to rate them from week-to-week. We will from time-to-time comment on the performance of a certain big ugly that impressed that week, but without a full season of game tapes, etc., it's hard to put them into a list compared to the other guys.

Second, this list will start to really take shape over the next few weeks. Saturday didn't provide us with a whole lot we didn't already know, but we can be sure players will start making bigger moves in the weeks to come.

So, let's begin:

The Top 15:

1) Darren Mcfadden (RB – Arkansas)
Mcfadden will be at the top until someone dislodges him, because he's not going to play himself out of this spot. He had another day at the office with over 150 yards on the ground, but what was truly spectacular was his 47 yard TD pass in the third quarter. He made a throw reminiscent of Jamarcus Russell (don't laugh): after a play fake and looking off a safety, he threw a strike off of his back foot and with a defender in his face - the receiver caught it in stride for an "easy" touchdown.

2) Brian Brohm (QB – Louisville)
Despite the fact the Cardinals get better looks from their scout team than what they saw on Thursday against Murray State, Brohm did what he had to do. He came out and didn't look hesitant at all in his first game back from injury – throwing 4 TD's and 375 yards.

3) DeSean Jackson (WR – California)
Despite only 4 receptions and 45 yards receiving, Jackson boosted his stock greatly with a great, great punt return. Very Reggie Bush-esque, and it made a believer out of me.

4) Glen Dorsey (DT – LSU)
Had five tackles and a sack against Mississippi State, and looked hard to block Thursday. He has a nose for the ball, and seemed to be right in the thick of things every play.

5) Early Doucet (WR – LSU)
Played very well, like his teammate, against Mississippi State, despite not having eye-popping numbers. The type of catches he made and his route running ability all impressed, and I continue to expect a huge year from him.

6) Derrick Harvey (DE – Florida)
Yet another one that's hard to move based on Saturday, how can you tell anything against Western Kentucky?

7) Steve Slaton (RB – West Virginia)
Again...(I know you are tired of hearing it) hard to move him either way, in a win where he was completely untested but played well. Showed his breakaway speed on a 58 yard TD run.

8) Matt Ryan (QB – Boston College)
Had a HUGE performance in a pretty big game, throwing for over 400 yards and 5 TD's. I guess that whole thing about BC opening up the offense was true, and I expect this guy to have a huge year. He may end up being a top 3 prospect (or maybe I'm just overexcited – once again, we need a few more weeks to tell).

9) Kenny Phillips (S – Miami)
Played well but not spectacular against Marshall. Only had one tackle, but the front seven suffocated Marshall so thoroughly that not many opportunities to make plays presented themselves to Phillips.

10) QB Andre Woodson (QB- Kentucky)
Has a Jason Campbell feel to it, doesn’t it? Struggles first couple years and then it all clicks. I see him going higher in the first round though, as he has far better tools than Campbell has even now.

11) Dan Conner (LB – Penn State)
PSU beat Florida International 59-0. He could have had 17 tackles with 3 interceptions and it would have told us nothing.

12) Limas Sweed (WR – Texas)
Sweed was one of the few bright spots in the Horns' completely unimpressive performance against Arkansas State on Saturday. Had close to 100 yards receiving and one TD, which proved to be the winning margin.

13) Calais Campbell (DE – Miami)
Had five tackles and an interception against Marshall on Saturday. He was a large part of the reason Miami's defense dominated Marshall so thoroughly, especially up-front.

14) Adarious Bowman (WR – Oklahoma State)
Though his team struggled against Georgia, you could still tell that Bowman was a talented wideout. He finished with 4 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, which aren’t exactly flattering, but he did nothing to hurt his stock either.

15) Felix Jones (RB – Arkansas)
A beautiful 94 yard kick return highlighted his big day Saturday. He also had 121 yards rushing and a TD there as well.
