2007 Fantasy Football Preview: Running Backs
By Ric Atkinson

I’m a running back guy. I always draft running backs with my first two draft picks. I firmly believe that the points you get from your running backs will make or break your fantasy team. Your chance of finding a top-notch running back on the wavier wire is about as good as Detroit’s chances of winning the Superbowl. So getting the best running backs available when you’re drafting should be the first thing on your mind.

With that in mind here are my projections for my top twenty fantasy football running backs of 2007.

1. LaDainian Tomlinson:
Unless you lived under a rock last year, you knew he was going to be on top of this list. I don’t expect him to match last year’s crazy good numbers, but I also wouldn’t be completely surprised if he did.

My projections: 1800 yards rushing, 20 rushing TDs, 500 receiving yards and 5 receiving TDs.

2. Steven Jackson:
A super talented guy about to hit his prime while playing in a supped up offense.

My projections: 1500 yards rushing, 12 rushing TDs, 700 receiving yards and 5 receiving TDs.

3. Larry Johnson
Workhorse back in a run first offense. My only concern is the aging KC offensive line.

My projections: 1500 yards rushing, 15 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 1 receiving TD.

4. Frank Gore:
Ready to step up into the role of a stud running back. Don’t get bogged down by the fact that he plays for the 49ers. He’s the real deal.

My projections: 1400 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 400 receiving yards and 2 receiving TDs.

5. Shaun Alexander:
If his foot is healed he’s a touchdown machine. Lot’s of people are saying he’s done, so he’s got a lot to prove.

My projections: 1000 yards rushing, 20 rushing TDs, 500 receiving yards and 5 receiving TDs.

6. Willie Parker:
The Steelers are still a run first team, and he is still the feature back. He is one of the fastest backs in the league so look for some long runs from him.

My projections: 1300 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 150 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

7. Brian Westbrook:
This guy is almost a wide receiver who gets to run the ball every now and then. If your league gives extra points for RBs that catch a lot of balls move him up your list.

My projections: 1000 yards rushing, 7 rushing TDs, 1000 receiving yards and 7 receiving TDs.

8. Rudi Johnson
Nothing flashy here. No huge games, but he is one of the most consistent RB in the league.

My projections: 1400 yards rushing, 12 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

9. Maurice Jones-Drew:
This is probably the closest thing to a sleeper pick as I’m going to give you. This guy is the real deal. He’s fast, strong, and smart. I’m looking for him to breakout in a huge way this year.

My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 500 receiving yards and 5 receiving TDs.

10. Joseph Addai:
Very solid back who benefits from the attention everyone around him gets. He also plays behind a great offensive line.

My projections: 1300 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 500 receiving yards and 3 receiving TDs.

11. Edgerrin James:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 300 receiving yards and 1 receiving TDs.

12. Reggie Bush:
My projections: 800 yards rushing, 6 rushing TDs, 800 receiving yards and 8 receiving TDs.

13. Brandon Jacobs:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 1 receiving TD.

14. Travis Henry:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs. Might be a huge upside with him.

15. Ronnie Brown:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

16. Clinton Portis:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 10 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

17. Willis McGahee:
My projections: 1200 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 300 receiving yards and 1 receiving TD.

18. Thomas Jones:
My projections: 1100 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

19. Laurence Maroney
My projections: 1000 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.

20. Marshawn Lynch:
My projections: 1000 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 200 receiving yards and 0 receiving TDs.
