Free March Madness Picks: Sunday Round 2
By Ron Jumper

With a stressful Saturday out of the way, I can move on to Sunday. Looking back, all five picks either went to overtime or were decided by 3 points or less. Needless to say, I was very stressed throughout the day. I look forward to Sunday’s action and expect to have a much smoother day.

(On a side note, I was sad to see VCU go. I really fell in love with those guys over the last few weeks of the season. Eric Maynor is my favorite player in the country without a doubt. By the way, was the foul on VCU at the end of regulation not the worst call in history? It was so great when Fields choked and missed BOTH free throws to take the game into OT.)

NCAA Tournament Record:
9-5-1 (64%)

Tennessee (-3.5) covers vs. Virginia

The Vols are the more complete team and they are very good at creating mismatches for their opponent. Virginia is a streaky team that is capable of shooting the lights out on the perimeter, however, the Vols defense will be well prepared. I also feel that Tennesee’s pressing up-tempo nature will cause Singletary and Reynolds to become fatigued, thus not having enough legs in their jumpshots. As I’ve stated before, if Virginia isn’t shooting well they don’t win. Vols 77-70

Kansas (-8) covers vs. Kentucky

I’m a Tubby Smith fan, I really am, but I just can’t see them keeping this game close for too long. The Wildcats will have trouble playing at the Jayhawk’s hectic pace. If the game gets up into the 70’s or 80’s, Kentucky won’t be able to keep up. Kansas 75-62

Nevada (+5) covers vs. Memphis

This is my upset special for Sunday. I have been high on Nevada all season long. On the other hand, Memphis is way overrated. Conference USA, without Memphis, compares similarly to the MAC or Sun Belt in quality. Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself. Regardless, I see Memphis making too many mistakes via turnovers and free throws. It will end up costing them in the end. Nevada 63-59

Florida (-10) covers vs. Purdue

Purdue has no answer inside for the Gators. Carl Landry is only 6’7” and there isn’t much size after that to speak of. Expect this one to get ugly early and stay that way. I am a Purdue fan and feel they are heading in the right direction, but it will be next year. Gators 80-60

Winthrop (+4) covers vs. Oregon

This doesn’t count as an upset to me. Don’t look at the name on the jersey, look at how they played Friday. Who did you think was the better team? I would have to say Winthrop. Don’t let this one shock you too much. Eagles 72-67
