Don't Be That Guy
By Ron Jumper
Certain players and coaches have given us a set person to reference when certain acts of stupidity and ignorance occur. We have an easy way to make our point in the next in-depth sports argument we get in. We can just simply say “don’t be that guy” and people will understand exactly what you are talking about. With this train of thought in mind, I came up with my Top 10 Don’t Be That Guy Slogans.
10. Don’t be that guy that tells the media one thing for a month only to turn around and do something completely different.
Nick Saban is this guy. With his credibility gone forever, that may not be the only thing gone here in just a short time. With it apparent he wasn’t getting it done or enjoying his stay in the NFL, if he doesn’t meet Alabama’s high standards in record time he won’t be fulfilling the full length of his contract. With Alabama having no patience for developing a program, Saban has very little time to rise to the top of the SEC West and compete overall in the SEC. With LSU and Auburn looking very strong, that could be a very tough task. Not to mention, Arkansas still has the runner-up Heisman Trophy candidate in Darren McFadden. My point in all this is that if he gets fired from Alabama, he will have a very hard time getting a premiere job for a long time. No one in the NFL will hire him and most colleges won’t want to pay his price tag.
9. With the trade deadline nearing, don’t be that guy that pulls the trigger on a crazy trade full of long term contracts.
Isiah Thomas is this guy. My honest opinion on Thomas is that he is just confused. He truly thinks he is playing NBA Live 2007 and that the best way to win is to increase his team rating. There is not even a close second in the category of trades made with absolutely no recognition of the salary cap included. There hasn’t been much talk about the Knicks lately, but don’t be surprised if something shocking happens that stirs up all the intrigue once again. It would be very Thomas-like.
8. Don’t be that guy that makes All-Star Weekend about the money.
Tyrus Thomas is this guy. Who comes out and says they just want to go out there so they can collect the paycheck? With all the history and prestige of the Dunk Contest, how are you going to make competing in it sound so obsolete? What makes this bad is that he went out there and stunk up the joint, as he didn’t even make the final round. It makes it appear as though he really was just out there to collect his paycheck and then get out of there. What a shame if that is true…
7. Don’t be that guy that has a great career and becomes remembered for a stupid comment.
Tim Hardaway is this guy. During the course of his career, the only problems Hardaway encountered were with his knees. I always liked Hardaway, especially with the Miami Heat. That Heat team was talented but couldn’t ever get over the hump in the playoffs, much to my chagrin. With Hardaway’s comments on gay athletes in the NBA, he has made sure no one will remember him for his actual career, only for one ignorant comment in a very sensitive time in terms of race and sexual preference in our society.
6. Don’t be that guy that tarnishes his image because of an angry wife in an ugly divorce.
Jason Kidd is this guy. Kidd was accused by his wife, Joumana, of cheating numerous times with cheerleaders, reporters, strippers, and virtually any women in the state of New Jersey. If these accusations hold up in court, Jason could have a tough time keeping endorsements or salvaging his image.
5. Don’t be that guy that makes a several-player deal, loses patience and gives up on it only to make another one of similarly low-quality.
Danny Ainge is this guy. Time and again, the Celtics have something good going and squander it. Look at guys like Chauncey Billups and Joe Johnson who were traded away for virtually nothing in return. Take into account all the head-scratching knee-jerk trades over the last few years. Who really thinks Sebastian Telfair is going to turn around the franchise? That could only be pure ignorance.
4. Don’t be that guy that claims the team isn’t interested in trading for a certain player and then a week later welcomes that player into the organization.
I actually am leaving this one as TBA. Expect all of the trade talks swirling around to amount to nothing in regards to what will actually happen. I just love when you hear how a team isn’t interested then, before you can say luxury tax, that same team is throwing in 1st round picks and expiring contracts like they are going out of style.
3. Don’t be that guy that ruins his legacy by trying to stick around too long.
Scottie Pippen is this guy. With talk of his return coming truly out of nowhere, I can’t even fathom who could be taking this seriously? What general manager says, “Wow, we could really use a 41-year old who has been out of the league for 3 years.” I just can’t comprehend this whole scenario for the life of me.
2. Don’t be that guy that hires a high school coach to sign certain recruits and then complains how the local media is hurting recruiting.
Houston Nutt is this guy. How the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks can make this claim is tough to understand. Did he really expect that the signing of a high school coach to get a blue chip quarterback and wide receiver would end up with everyone living happily ever after? Of course when this whole situation blew up, the media was going to point the blame squarely on Nutt’s shoulders. Sometimes, even if you don’t like it, you just have to take the blame and move on.
1. Don’t be that guy that sparks controversy for his own personal interests.
John Amaechi is this guy. After Jose Canseco opened this door, don’t expect this trend to stop any time soon. While Amaechi seems like a well spoken and highly intellectual man, I just don’t see any way around the fact that his coming out was a publicity stunt and a way to generate some extra income. I just pray this doesn’t take us down a road as ugly as the steroid controversy in baseball.
