Time To Shine
By Ron Jumper
It was BracketBuster Saturday during last season of the NCAA basketball season, Louisiana Tech was visiting Southern Illinois in what would turn out to be a vivid memory as I watched the game unfold. The Salukis came out strong at home and you wondered if they were going to run away with it. Thats when the nation's best big man you didn't know had to hold it down. Louisiana Tech power forward Paul Milsap, standing at only 6'7", took control.
Milsap, without question the emotional leader, settled his team down and got them back in the game. Late in the game, with the outcome hanging in the balance, it was his time to put the game away. He led his team to a very impressive win on the road. Watching that performance, I was sold this guy could be a good NBA player. I said to myself, "This guy is going to be a great value pick." Yes, there is always the chance he turns out to be the next Michael Wright. Wright was a 6'7" undersized power forward back in the glory days out in Arizona.
I started to look up some information on this guy. I bet you didn't know Milsap led the entire nation in rebounding as a freshman and sophomore. How did this guy end up at Louisiana Tech, you might ask? Well that is a good question. The former Nike All-American and Lousiana Select AAU standout had his sights set on the Bulldogs from the beginning. He had a relative on the coaching staff and his house was only about 4 miles from campus. Nevermind LSU, Arkansas, and others were in the mix, he was staying home.
At the end of last season, Milsap decided to come out early for the draft. Mock drafts had him all over the board, but primarily in the 2nd round. On draft night, he slipped all the way down to 47th by the Utah Jazz. With Okur, Boozer, Collins, and Kirilenko along the frontline, it wasn't a sure thing he would make it past training camp. Milsap persevered however, and kept working. He became a favorite of head coach Jerry Sloan and began to break the rotation. There became a quiet buzz about the undersized power forward from Grambling, LA.
Now, with Carlos Boozer out and the Jazz in the thick of the playoff hunt, Sloan has no choice but to turn Milsap to help carry the load. In the last 3 games, he has averaged 15.3 points and 12.3 boards. Consider the young fella has another 4 to 6 weeks before Boozer comes back, and you have all the makings of a new name on the short list of Rookie Of The Year candidates.
I'm not saying Milsap is going to be a Legend. I'm not saying he is going to make the Hall of Fame. I'm not even saying he'll ever play in an All-Star game. I am saying that Paul Milsap has worked hard and continually proven all the haters wrong time and again. Never underestimate the importance of hard work, Milsap sure didn't...
