NFL Playoff Matchups: Week 2
By Ron Jumper
After the first weekend of the playoffs, it is safe to say it will be an exciting year of playoff matchups. However, the problem with that is the games become even more difficult to predict. Last weekend, I went 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS. Not great, but still in a managable position to finish the playoffs in good shape. The themes of past playoffs still stand true, experience and great quarterback play are very important. That being said, you will notice a common theme in this week's picks.
Indianapolis Colts (+4) covers vs. Baltimore Ravens
Matchups To Watch: QB Peyton Manning vs. SS Ed Reed OT Johnathon Ogden vs. DE Dwight Freeney RB Joseph Addai vs MLB Ray Lewis
This game is much simpler than it may seem. Last week, we focused on whether the Colts could stop the run but this week that isn't as big an issue, as Jamal Lewis just doesn't appear to be his usual self with only 2 100-yard rushing games all year. This week, the Colts have to give Manning time to throw the ball down the field. There are two ways to get that done, create balance by running the ball or mix in all different kinds of screens and draws. I see Manning bouncing back from a 3 interception game to put together a near flawless outing. Colts 24-21
New Orleans Saints (-6) cover vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Matchups To Watch: RB Reggie Bush vs. MLB Jeremiah Trotter QB Drew Brees vs. DC Jim Johnson
The Saints have the edge here in multiple areas. They have the better QB in Drew Brees and the home field advantage. I just get the feeling that Jeff Garcia won't be able to generate the same amount of offense that the Saints can. With Reggie Bush and Deuce McCallister to keep the Eagles defense honest, Drew Brees should have enough time to make plays vertically. Saints 28-21
Seattle Seahawks (+8.5) covers vs. Chicago Bears
Matchup To Watch: RB Shaun Alexander vs. Bears D-Line
This is real simple for the Seahawks. They have to run the ball effectively. If Alexander gets over 75 yards, it will give the offense enough balance to keep out of 3rd and long situations and keep the Bears defense honest. With Bears DT Tommie Harris out, I see them having a chance to run the ball. For the Bears, I don't have a lot of faith in Rex Grossman this season. With 5 games of at least 3 interceptions, Grossman can blow it for his team on Sunday. Bears 17-13
New England Patriots (+4.5) covers vs. San Diego Chargers
Matchups To Watch: QB Tom Brady vs. QB Phillip Rivers HC Bill Belichick vs. HC Marty Schottenheimer
Let's be honest, we all know that the Patriots will be well prepared and cause some confusion on the Charger's sideline. Belichick is the master of gameplans and Schottenheimer is the master of choking. Tom Brady is the best clutch QB in the game and Phillip Rivers is making his first playoff debut. Expect a conservative gameplan by the Chargers and a sharp Patriots team that pulls off another amazing upset. Patriots 27-24
