College Football: Championship Weekend
By Ron Jumper
With big games comes big variables that are unpredictable. There is simply no way to predict a team getting down to its 3rd string QB (as was the case with Ohio last night) or something else like special teams miscues such as botched snaps and blocked kicks. Those just seem so much more prevalent the bigger the game is. With that being said, I wouldn’t plan on betting large sums on the forthcoming games (just friendly advice that will probably be ignored).
Houston (-4.5) covers vs. Southern Miss
Kevin Kolb is the best player on the field. Kolb is the guy that is going to make the difference for me. As much as I hate to go against Southern Miss since I like their Coach Jeff Bower a lot, I just think Kevin Kolb at home will be tough the second time around. Southern Miss beat Houston earlier this season down in Mississippi 31-27, but the key adjustment the Cougars have made is involving Anthony Aldridge in the offense more. Aldridge is averaging 129.2 yards a game in the last 5 games, not to mention an impressive 11 YPC over that time period. Houston 28-21

Wake Forest (+2.5) covers vs. Georgia Tech
The Demon Deacons are playing inspired football this season and they seem destined for an ACC crown. Georgia Tech’s Reggie Ball just won’t be able to make enough plays to get the job done. Expect Calvin Johnson to be frustrated by halftime. Wake Forest 24-21

Florida (-3) covers vs. Arkansas
As magical a run as the Hogs have had, I see it stopping here. Expect Chris Leak to spread the ball all around the field. The spread offense has given the Hogs fits all season, even Vandy was able to move the ball when they spread the Hogs out. As far as stopping Darren McFadden, forget about it. However, the Gators have enough team speed and size to keep him from running wild. I see Casey Dick having another subpar day and the Hogs struggling to find any semblance of balance on offense. Florida 31-21

Nebraska (+4) covers vs. Oklahoma
The Sooners have been surviving without Adrian Peterson, but Paul Thompson doesn’t have the throwing ability to keep the Sooners in it if the game gets into the 20s and 30s. On the other hand, Zac Taylor has been sensational with 24 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Nebraska 27-24
