Free College Picks: Week 13
By Ron Jumper
With the regular season winding down, this is the last week of the 5-pick format. Starting next week, all the conference championship games will be broken down and from there I will give you my bowl game thoughts and predictions (which will be much more thorough than the weekly picks). With that out of the way, lets get started…
Money Balance: $317.50 (+117.50)
College Record: 39-24-1
Western Michigan (+1.5) covers vs. Akron
The Broncos are a good football team. They have proved to be even better than people realize they are. Akron, who isn’t a bad football team either, has been excellent at home. This game will be very close but Western Michigan just has better playmakers when it comes down to it. Broncos 24-17
Risk $11 to Win $10
Utah (+10.5) covers vs. BYU
This is a BYU team that is playing well beyond expectations. However, the Utes have dominated them in recent history and get the Cougars at home. This is just way too large a line for a game that should be close. BYU 28-24
Risk $22 to Win $20
Boise State (-3) covers vs. Nevada
With a lot at stake, Boise State should take advantage of their last chance to make a statement. This is a solid Nevada team, but they just can’t keep up with the Broncos. Expect this game to be high scoring, but don’t expect an upset. Boise State 42-28
Risk $22 to Win $20
Notre Dame (+7.5) covers vs. USC
I’m not going to give you a bunch of gibberish about Brady Quinn and Charlie Weis. I’m not going to bore with any statistics on this one, just simply playing the odds. With this game likely to come down to the wire, the odds of USC winning by 2 scores isn’t likely. USC 34-31
Risk $22 to Win $20
Purdue (+17) covers vs. Hawaii
As much respect as I have for WAC, I can’t help but think this line is a little ridiculous. Purdue is 8-4, which is pretty impressive. I know the Warriors put up huge numbers, but the Boilermakers can score as well. This just seems to make sense. Hawaii 35-31
Risk $11 to Win $10

It Must Be Said…
With an impressive win over North Carolina Wednesday night, the Gonzaga Bulldogs reminded us all why we fell in love with them in the first place. These guys just keep on proving everyone wrong and doing the impossible. This was supposed to be a down year for Mark Few’s bunch, but it doesn’t appear that way any longer.
This is a team that lacks big time stars, unlike the Tar Heels. You won’t find McDonald’s All-Americans all over the place, but you will find fundamentals and team basketball. As much as I love UNC and Roy Williams, I once again found myself pulling for the Zags. You see once the Bulldogs starting getting big name players and being ranked high in the polls, I couldn’t help but lose interest because they weren’t the underdog anymore.
As this season began, many felt this Gonzaga team wouldn’t be as good as previous teams. However, this team has just kept on winning and it hasn’t missed a beat. Mark Few is a phenomenal coach. I repeat, Mark Few is a phenomenal coach. In college, it is all about coaching. Yes, you need talent, but the importance of fundamentals and team chemistry get left out of the discussion way too often.
