SEC Upside Down
By Ron Jumper
With the SEC turning upside down, the Florida Gators and the surprising Arkansas Razorbacks are the only remaining undefeated teams in SEC play. Neither team was expected to be after this weekend as both went into Saturday as the underdogs, Arkansas being +17 and Florida +3. I must admit I wasn’t planning on either team escaping the grasps of defeat so I can’t say I told you so. I will say, at the beginning of the year, I picked Florida to win the SEC and Arkansas to go 8-4. The Gators are in great shape to win the SEC and the Hogs could even win 9 games after brutally beating the Auburn Tigers.
The Gators get Auburn next week and, if Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville has any pride, the Tigers will give Florida all they got and then some. With Florida shuffling quarterbacks and having little success on the ground, the defense and special teams will have to continue to make plays for Urban Meyer. I know that Chris Leak and Tim Tebow seem to like each other and are playing pretty well, but there is only so long that system can work.
(I feel for Chris Leak for a number of reasons, ranging from the fans who boo him to his lack of Heisman publicity. Let me paint a picture for you, imagine the Gators without Tim Tebow and without all the QB controversy. Imagine if all of the gimme touchdowns that Tebow has scored were added to Leak’s numbers, who still has a shot at being the SEC’s all time leading passer. Imagine being the heart and soul of the now second-ranked team in the nation. If you were Chris Leak, what would you think? Would you feel like Urban Meyer was kicking you to the curb so he could keep his latest prized recruit happy? Even if he didn’t feel that way, how could he possibly be happy about Tebow taking away from how wonderful he has played this season and in his career? Remember, Chris Leak was just as prized of a recruit as Tebow was. Remember, Chris Leak has started from day 1. Tim Tebow will be a good quarterback, we just shouldn’t know that yet.)
The Arkansas Razorbacks have a golden opportunity. The Hogs have Southeast Missouri State, Ole Miss, and Louisiana-Monroe coming up in the next three weeks before going to South Carolina. With a 7-1 start all but certain, the game at South Carolina could be a huge factor in the SEC West race. That would put them at 5-0 with Mississippi State still on the schedule, as well as getting Tennessee and LSU at home. There couldn’t be a prettier picture for Razorback fans. The Razorbacks have a shot at being the worst team in history ranked in the top 10 if they win their next 4 games. Imagine a team that was beaten 50-14 by USC, a team that only beat Vanderbilt by 2, and a team that only put up 20 points on Utah State ranked in the top 10! True Hog fans will say they deserve that ranking, but deep down they have to know there is no way in hell they can compete on that level.
Well, the only certain thing from here on is that it should be interesting. There is sure to be another twist or turn looming. I won’t even try to tell you where it will come from but stay tuned, it will come from where you least expect it. If you have ever wondered why the SEC hasn’t had a national champion recently, Saturday should have made it crystal clear that the SEC is just too deep and too talented to run through undefeated.
