Week 5 College Football Picks
By Ron Jumper
With an interesting week last week under the belt, I’m feeling really good about this week’s picks. The matchups start to become more clear and there is very little left to the unknown. The flip side is the lines become more and more on the money. It is amazing how many games end up tying the spread. As I’ve stated before, ties drive me nuts to the point that I would almost rather lose. You didn’t make a great pick or a dumb pick, it was merely just a waste of time. Anyways, I kept help but ramble on sometimes…
Ohio State traveling to Iowa is the only real intriguing game. Without any other real big headline games to pick this week, it is more fun to talk about the smaller schools and the non-conference matchups. Teams like Idaho and Temple deserve some love every now and then too. Without any further delays, I bring you Week 5 Picks…
Overall Record: 24-14-2 ATS (63%)
Money Balance: $278.50 (+78.50)
Toledo (+14) covers vs. Pittsburgh
Toledo has always been that school that creeps up and takes a game from a BCS conference school when no one is looking every now and then. They have already beaten a mediocre Kansas team this season. Pittsburgh doesn’t run the ball well and will have trouble running away with this game because of that. I still really don’t consider Panthers that good, seeing as they’ve only beaten an awful Virginia team, Big East bottom-feeder Cincy, and strawberry cupcake The Citadel. Pitt 24-21.

Tennessee (-13.5) covers vs. Memphis
This is a no-brainer. Tennessee is going to beat up on Memphis like an older brother picking on his little brother. The Tigers lost D’Angelo Williams and they just don’t have anything going for them. Eastern Carolina beat Memphis 35-20 last week, just can’t see the Vols not running away with this one. Vols 35-7.
Risk $22 to Win $20
Georgia Tech(+9) covers vs. Virginia Tech
I’m just not sold on Virginia Tech. I can’t help it, they just don’t impress me. Maybe I’m wrong, but this could be the week they go down. The Yellow Jackets have more fire power at the skill positions, which is critical in close games. This is a game where the Hokies offense will have to drive 80 yards to score a few times and I just don’t think they can. Remember, the Georgia Tech defense has only given up an average of 5 points in the first half. Georgia Tech 27-17. Risk $11 To Win $10
Temple (+34.5) covers vs. Vanderbilt
This is just a crazy line. Vandy only scored 36 points in their first 3 games. Yes, Temple is terrible but you can’t be serious. If the Commodores even score 35 points I will be very surprised. Vanderbilt 28-7.
Risk $22 to Win $20
Iowa (+7) covers vs. Ohio State
The Hawkeyes are very solid in every area of the game. I believe Ohio State is superior to Iowa but, in order to go undefeated, there must be some close calls along the way. Drew Tate has the ability to make this game interesting. If Troy Smith’s passing totals continue to get lower like they have every game so far this year, the Hawkeyes could create BCS drama. Buckeyes 21-19.
Risk $11 to Win $10

RC’s College Pick Of The Week:
Record: 3-2
Idaho (-3) covers vs. Utah State
The Aggies still haven’t scored an offensive touchdown this season. Idaho has at least won a game and been somehwhat respectable in games. As intimidating as Utah State’s 1.8 scoring average is, I think I’m taking the Vandals. Idaho 24-3.
