Q&A with Coach Rip
By Ron Jumper
I thought I’d ask someone “in the know” what they thought about the upcoming football season, so who would be better than Charles Ripley. He has the inside scoop on all aspects of Razorback football and anything football related in the state of Arkansas. Well, here is what he had to say…
1. If you were Arkansas Razorbacks Head Coach Houston Nutt, who would you start at quarterback against USC? How long would you stick with that choice before you made a change?
If I was the head coach based on what I have seen so far. I would start Casey Dick. I think he is a gamer and a competitor. His back has healed and he is ready to go. The change would come only when one of the others has progressed and is ready.
2. If we do indeed open up the offense, do you feel Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis will get the amount of touches they each deserve?
No question they will get all the touches they want. The SEC is brutal and with the 12 game schedule it is important to have fresh legs in November.
3. With USC, Alabama, Tennessee, and LSU coming into Arkansas this season, which game are you looking most forward to?
I love all the games. I like the directional school games just as much as Alabama or any of the others. I just love the atmosphere of College Football. I especially love the road games in the SEC.
4. How would you predict the SEC West?
I must go with Arkansas, LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
5. On a national scale, who is your choice for winning the BCS National Championship Game?
I think it is wide open this year. The added game this season will be more of a factor than people realize.
6. If a playoff system was to be put in place in college football, how would you do it?
I do not favor a playoff but, if there was one, I would favor the BCS games plus one additional game. Rotate 2 of the BCS bowls every year and have a semi-final. Then add a week for a championship game between the two winners.
7. How much will losing Darren Mcfadden hurt, since we do have solid depth at the running back position? Do you see it costing the Hogs more than a win or two at most?
Losing McFadden will definitely hurt. How much we probably won’t know, because it is a team game. It is a 66 man game. It is not like basketball where it is a seven or eight man game and one man can make a huge difference.
8. How far is UCA from competing in Division I-AA? How well will the basketball team be able to compete this season playing as a DI independent?
This is a very difficult transition for any school in any sport because the NCAA rules are set up to make it difficult. UCA will go through at least four very difficult years in football & basketball.
