Coach Rip: A Real Sports Hero
By Ron Jumper

We associate sports figures as heroes in today’s society, but what really constitutes being a hero? Is it being able to hit 70 home runs? Is it throwing for 40 touchdown passes? Is it averaging a triple-double? Nope, it sure isn’t…

The truth is that the sports figures of today are no more heroes than anyone else. Just because they are on television and making millions of dollars doesn’t make them any more of a hero than someone else who works just as hard but wasn’t blessed with all the talent and charisma. I’ll take someone who does things for the greater good and doesn’t care about the attention he gets for it. In fact, someone who would just assume go unnoticed and let someone else have the credit because, after all, that isn’t what it is really all about is it?

The person I want to recognize is Charles Ripley, just call him “Coach Rip” for short. Besides the fact that he has been one of the most accomplished high school coaches in the history of high school basketball in Arkansas, Rip has been doing more for inner-city kids than I can even begin to tell you. The amount of shoes, meals, and clothes this man has given to underprivileged kids goes far beyond what any person can accomplish with a bat or a ball. Rip doesn’t stop there, he goes above and beyond to make sure kids always have a place to play ball and a school for them to attend. If a kid has the talent to continue his career on beyond high school, there is a great chance Rip is going to make it happen no matter what the circumstances are. Officially, his work is the Court Of Dreams but, unofficially, he is what a true sports hero should be…

On July 24, at the River Market pavilion in Little Rock, new Razorbacks quarterbacks coach Alex Wood will be the guest speaker at a dinner. Wood, who has NFL coaching experience, is said to be an amazing speaker. Every single penny that gets raised goes towards scholarship money for kids. It is a great cause that really should not be ignored. If you have any desire to go or would just like to make a donation please do so, you won’t regret it. You can even donate right here on this website at the right side of your screen. Don’t miss out on your chance to be a hero to someone who needs you very much. The ball is in your court, make the right decision…
