Straight To The Point
By Ron Jumper

So with free agency in full swing, who is making the right moves and who is getting taken to school? There is always a huge difference in opinion but, hey, that’s why we all get to have one. Personally, guys like Marc Stein and Rich Bucher telling me who made the right moves just doesn’t carry a lot of weight. I struggle to listen to people who don’t come across as athletes. When Kenny Smith says it, it just sounds better…anyways…on to the point.

Some teams have been active, some teams have been sitting back. Some teams should be more active while some teams should just be just sitting back. Just because your maing moves doesn’t mean you improved. Take the Celtics draft for example, they moved Raef Lafrentz and the 7th pick to get Sebastian Telfair and Theo Ratliff. How does that help anything? Take Randy Foye at 7 and go from there. There is a point to where you have keep players long enough to develop chemistry. Some teams over prepare for the future. Take Golden State for example, they have been drafting and adding players for the future for about a decade. At some point, you have to decide you want to win this year. Patrick O’Bryant doesn’t help you this year. With Baron Davis and Jason Richardson, you have a very solid backcourt. With Troy Murphy and Andris Beidrins, you have a solid front line. Why don’t you take a guy that helps you right now? Hilton Armstrong, Ronnie Brewer, J.J. Reddick, and guys of that caliber can help fill a need now.

The Chicago Bulls have been said to have made major upgrades to their roster. That being said, I completely do not agree. How does Tyrus Thomas help you now? Can we really feel safe about a player from Switzerland? How is Ben Wallace worth $52 million? How does adding P.J. Brown justify getting rid of Tyson Chandler? There still isn’t the taller backcourt player they coveted. They still have no form of offense inside. They will improve in rebounding, obviously, but how do you plan on scoring in the 4th quarter with P.J. Brown and Ben Wallace both on the floor? They are said to be contenders. I just do not see it at all. They might could work there way into home-court in the first round.

The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets made some intriguing moves. I think adding Peja is a solid move for them. It might even save his career. He was an awful fit in Indy, though he could have been used more efficiently. However, he now has freedom to shoot at will and play his game with Chris Paul finding him for easy shots. With plenty of young big men and Chris Paul, Hornets fans have to be relatively excited about the next few years.

Amazingly, the Knicks haven’t been making any trades. They have more tradeable parts than any team in the league! I just don’t get Isiah Thomas. He has said he likes the current roster. How do they play on playing Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury, Jamal Crawford, Jalen Rose, Nate Robinson, and Mardy Collins? I’m just going to refrain from making any more comments on Renaldo Balkman. Well ok, just one comment… that might possibly have been the biggest reach in NBA history! That includes Darko, Sam Bowie, Desaga Diop, and plenty of other reaches over the years.

Portland may have the best young talent in the league. With Brandon Roy, Martell Webster, and Lamarcus Aldridge planning on being serious contributors, it is safe to say they are the youngest team in the league. In fact, they have four first round picks joining the roster this season. If they stick with what they have I think they might be onto something. Teams usually break the plan because of impatient fans and forceful owners but hopefully the once proud Trailblazers can get things turned around.

The Utah Jazz have put themselves in an interesting situation. If they can stay healthy, this is a playoff team. Adding Ronnie Brewer, Dee Brown, and Paul Millsap are all great additions. All three players were guys that I felt like weren’t high enough on the draft board. This is probably the best draft the Jazz have ever had. They resigned Matt Harpring, which was very important. Now this team just needs to stay healthy and build some chemistry with one another. Am I the only person that finds it interesting that they have Dee Brown and Deron Williams?

The off-season has started with a boom and I’m just curious to see what will happen next…
