If It Was Up To Me...
By Ron Jumper
I try to tell people but they just don’t listen. The world is truly missing out on what I have to say. I know the NCAA Commissioner is busy and everything, but all I need is five minutes of his time and he’d be sold to my beautiful idea. I’ve figured out a way to solve all the NCAA’s problems with the BCS, the polls, and the idea of a playoff. It sounds crazy but I’d use all three!
There would be 24 teams in the NCAA Tournament and 16 teams in the National Invitational Tournament. The reason the NCAA doesn’t want to get away from the bowl game format is because of money. This idea gives you 38 games that will all be sold out and receive great ratings. Most bowl games don’t sell out and even less get great ratings. How many fans only watch their team and then the BCS games? That’s what I do, I’m not going to lie to you. This way every game is an exciting one. People would fill out brackets and make every game meaningful to some degree. As far as ticket sales, I can’t see how they wouldn’t sell out. If the playoffs began the week after the conference championships, the championship game would be played on January 7th. Now, you’re probably wondering why I chose 24 teams. That number allows you to give the 8 teams that would normally make the BCS a first round bye. The other 16 would be seeded by their rank in the polls. This way every component is used to help determine the outcome. The BCS teams would be seeded by who was ranked highest in the BCS.
Going by the rankings prior to the bowl games, the top 8 seeds would be in this order: USC, Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, West Virginia, Florida State.
The next 16 seeds listed in the polls: Oregon, Auburn, Miami, LSU, Virginia Tech, Alabama, TCU, Texas Tech, Louisville, UCLA, Florida, Boston College, Wisconsin, Michigan, Clemson, Georgia Tech.
Now for my imaginary playoff…
Firstt Round Matchups: 9 Oregon vs. 24 Georgia Tech. Ducks 28-14 10 Auburn vs. 23 Clemson. Tigers 35-24 11 Miami vs. 22 Michigan. ‘Canes 24-21 ( Honestly say that wouldn’t be awesome…) 12 LSU vs. 21 Wisconsin. Tigers 28-27 13 Virginia Tech vs. 20 Boston College. Hokies 35-10 14 Alabama vs. 19 Florida. Florida 28-13 ( What a difference Tyrone Prothro makes…) 15 TCU vs. 18 UCLA. Bruins 35-31 16 Texas Tech vs. 17 Louisville. Cardinals 28-24
Second Round Matchups: 8 Florida State vs. 9 Oregon. Ducks 28-17 ( Exactly why a playoff is needed…) 7 West Virginia vs. 10 Auburn. Tigers 28-20 6 Georgia vs. 11 Miami. ‘Dawgs 21-17 ( The upset many would have picked…) 5 Notre Dame vs. 12 LSU. Irish 31-21 4 Ohio State vs. 13 Virginia Tech. Hokies 16-14 ( Bracket Buster…) 3 Penn State vs. 19 Florida. Penn State 31-28 2 Texas vs. 18 UCLA. ‘Horns 55-14 1 USC vs. 17 Louisville. Trojans 38-31 ( Athletic Card’s D makes it competitive…)
At this point, we are down to the Elite 8 and the matchups get even better.
Third Round Matchups: 9 Oregon vs. 1 USC. Trojans 35-34 Ducks fight to the end in the rematch. 10 Auburn vs. 2 Texas. ‘Horns 21-17 Tigers give Horns serious scare. 6 Georgia vs. 3 Penn State. ‘Dawgs 24-14 Georgia showing they are an elite team. 5 Notre Dame vs. 13 Virginia Tech. Irish 42-38 Quinn vs. Vick something to watch.
Fourth Round Matchups: 1 USC vs. 5 Notre Dame. Irish 34-31 Notre Dame does the unthinkable. 2 Texas vs. 6 Georgia. Horns 28-19 Texas “D” steps up big.
National Championship: 2 Texas vs. 5 Notre Dame. Horns 49-45 Vince Young vs. Brady Quinn breaks the record for total combined offense in a postseason game. The TV ratings are also ground breaking and the estimated price of a commercial skyrocketed to $2.5 million(Ok so I pulled that completely out of my ass).
This isn’t ever going to happen but, honestly, tell me it wouldn’t be entertaining.
It never hurts to dream…
