NBA Preview 2008/09: Final Call

Couldn't Ask For More
By Ron Jumper

The most compelling NBA Finals since the Michael Jordan Era. The Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks series has the potential to be one of the most entertaining series we’ve seen. Will Shaq win another ring? Can Dirk prove he is good enough to win a championship? Will this shut Mark Cuban up for a little while? Does this mean Pat Riley can retire again? Does this put Dwyane Wade ahead of Lebron James in the quest for individual supremacy?

It is one of the few times I will be happy with the outcome either way. I can’t help but like Avery Johnson, anytime a guy that has been told he can’t do something and then he goes out and does it anyway is a great thing for sports followers anywhere. I’ve even gotten to where I like Mark Cuban. He is always on top of things and does a great job trying to improve the way the NBA system works. I’d like to see Dirk be put into the upper-echelon of the NBA greats. I like Shaq, can’t stand Kobe, so for Shaq to get a ring in this particular fashion would be refreshing. I’ve always stood by Pat Riley, even through the tougher times, so to see him get another ring is a good thing. Dwyane Wade is such a great player and a great person, so you couldn’t possibly not want him to have a championship ring.

At this time, I would like to remind everyone who picked Dallas to beat Miami in the finals from the beginning so please feel free to applaud, cheer, or whatever you feel compelled to do. I wrote an article entitled “Formula For Success” so if you haven’t had a chance to read that successful prediction you really should check that out.

There are several interesting matchups in this series that make it really hard to get a feel for how the series will unfold. With Shaq playing at a high level, the Mavericks are forced to play Eric Dampier and Desagna Diop large minutes. With one of those players on the floor a large portion of the time, the Mavericks may not be able to play as fast of a pace as they usually desire. In the San Antonio series, Avery Johnson played Dirk and Van Horn as the inside guys so they could spread the floor and run. This series doesn’t appear to present that option to Johnson. The Mavericks, at times, have started Jason Terry and Devin Harris together so which one of them guards Dwyane Wade in those scenarios? I think your going to see a lot of Jerry Stackhouse in this series so Josh Howard can guard D-Wade. Which if that is the case, the matchup between Antoine Walker and Stackhouse could be the x-factor in this series. Dallas has no chance at winning the points in the paint battle so Devin Harris and Jason Terry have to outplay Jason Williams and Gary Payton.

This should be a great NBA Finals. The NBA may have finally returned to its usual form. The fans, ratings, and interest level seem to be back on a high level. Enjoy this series and keep in mind you’re watching history unfold…
