A Storm Is Brewing
By Ron Jumper

Ronnie Brewer has been all over the charts recently and no one has a real good feel for where he will end up. Brewer is a 6’7” guard and really did everything for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He provided scoring, rebounding, steals, and electrifying dunks. Some scouts feel he is one of the most talented players in the draft while others would say his fundamentally flawed shooting stroke could limit his potential.

As unpredictable as the NFL draft was this year, that was just the appetizer and the NBA draft is the main course. There really is no way to know how the draft will fall once a pick or two falls out of order. Realistically, Brewer could be picked anywhere from 8th by Houston or 16th by Chicago. The important thing isn’t how high he was drafted but whom he was drafted by. He might fall to 25th by Cleveland for all we know, but that could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Brewer might become Lebron James’ version of Scottie Pippen. The possibilities are endless…

There are several things to look for as the draft begins to take shape. The decisions made early in the draft will have a domino affect on where Brewer lands. The Chicago Bulls have the 2nd pick and the 16th pick. If the Bulls take Lamarcus Aldridge, the seven-footer out of Texas, then they will draft a big guard with the 16th pick. If Aldridge is unavailable then the Bulls may be forced to go in a different direction. Adam Morrison, Rudy Gay, Rodney Carney, and Brewer are the best SG/SF prospects. Those are the players that have the potential to be the next Tracy McGrady or Kobe Bryant. Coaches and general managers are always drooling over the possibilities of landing that caliber of a player. Morrison and Gay are the two best prospects, so the sooner they get off the board the sooner teams start looking at the next best available talent like Brewer and Carney.

Lets take a look at some possible scenarios:

1.If Gay and Morrison are both taken in the top 5, then teams like Minnesota and Houston would have to look really hard at Brewer. He fits in very well with both teams. Minnesota’s roster is built for a more up-tempo style team. Marcus Banks, Ricky, and Kevin Garnett are as athletic as they come so adding Brewer as a SG/SF certainly makes sense here. If Houston fires Stan Van Gundy, then the Rockets would be crazy to let Brewer go in this scenario. Rafer Alston could lead the league in assists with Brewer, T-Mac, and Stromile Swift to create opportunities for in transition. That also really helps them defensively as well because Brewer could guard the great scorers and allow McGrady to stay out of foul trouble.

2.If Gay or Morrison slip out of the top 5, then teams like Orlando and Philadelphia become great options for Brewer. Orlando has young talent inside for the next decade with Dwight Howard and Darko Milicic. They are currently lacking a great scorer/athlete on the perimeter so Brewer fits here. Philadelphia is a solid fit for Brewer because of his ability to handle the ball so efficiently. The plan there is to move Iverson back to shooting guard but, in order for that to be most effective, you must have a big point guard to accommodate for Iverson’s lack of size. Brewer, certainly, fits there.

3.If Brewer’s stock drops him out of the lottery, then look for Chicago or Indiana to pounce on the golden opportunity. Chicago has said they want a big guard. They feel Hinrich, Gordon, and Duhon are good players but not quite big enough to guard the premiere scorers. Indiana needs someone on the perimeter who can penetrate the lane and provide a little more athleticism. It also appeared Peja Stojakovic wasn’t real happy about his role during the playoffs, so he might not be the long term answer for the Pacers.

For Ronnie Brewer, the sky is the limit and a promising NBA career seems almost certain. Don’t get too caught up in how high or low he gets drafted. Just remember guys like Josh Howard(drafted 29th), Gilbert Arenas(drafted 31st), and Carlos Boozer(drafted 35th). Just a thought...
