NBA Needs To Get A Grip
By Ron Jumper

The NBA just isn’t doing things right this year. The players are acting like hoodlums and, from a TV rating perspective, the people making the schedule are complete idiots. The purposely thrown elbows, grabbing of private parts, and close-lining of opposing players has gotten out of hand. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of being physical and setting the tone. When the Washington Wizards were banging around Lebron James in game 2 I felt like that was just part of the game. All the great players like Jordan, Bird, or Magic were given unfriendly treatment by opposing players on opposing teams. The Detroit Pistons were notorious for being physical and banging guys around in the late 80’s and early 90’s, don’t forget Dennis Rodman played for the Pistons and the Chicago Bulls of the championship era as well.

The NBA has sent out very mixed signals in the last 2 weeks. I thought I knew what constituted being suspended; but now, I have no idea what the NBA is doing. I’m going to start from the top, Ron Artest whacked Manu Ginobili in the back of the head with his elbow and got the suspension he deserved for 2 reasons: his prior track record and the NBA rule of no intentional contact above the head. Udonis Haslem was suspended for being angry and throwing his mouthpiece at a referee after he thought he was fouled. If you decide that you are going to suspend a player for throwing something or endangering an official then that’s fine. James Posey leveled Kirk Hinrich and was suspended for a game, which I felt probably could have been left as a flagrant foul but at this point it seemed like the NBA was trying to make a point that they wanted the games to be cleaned up so, once again, I was okay with the decision. Then the NBA decided to go in the complete opposite direction, Reggie Evans was not suspended for grabbing Chris Kaman in his man section. How could that not be worse than any of the above situations mentioned? Is Reggie Evans above the rules? Does he have such a good previous track record that he gets a freebie? I think this is a terrible act and should have been gotten a lengthy suspension leading into the next season! If Raja Bell had any sense, he would have left good enough alone. Raja Bell and Kobe Bryant had been giving each other shoves and elbows throughout the game, so to snap like Bell did was ridiculous. I don’t think he should be suspended because Reggie Evans wasn’t suspended. However, if I am James Posey or Udonis Haslem, I am upset because that is not much different what either of them did.

The NBA has quite possibly made the worst possible schedule of the NBA games. Why in the world are games being play on NBA TV? I like NBA TV but really? How can you have the Detroit Pistons, the best team in the NBA, not available on basic cable? Detroit is not only the best team in the league, but the city of Detroit is one of the biggest television markets in the nation. The New Jersey Nets and the Indiana Pacers have been having a great series but no one has gotten to watch it either. How can a series with Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, Peja Stojakovic, and Jermaine O’Neal be deemed unworthy of basic cable? The defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, who haven’t just been cruising by the Sacramento Kings, were forced to play a very pivotal game 5 on NBA TV. Why can’t they just have games on TBS and TNT? Heck, why couldn’t ESPN have took the game? I have no idea what is going on.

The NBA is having the most exciting 1st round of the playoffs in a long time, I just hate that it isn’t what the fans are talking about due to suspensions(or lack of suspensions) and the fact that a lot of the games were not available for viewing. I will always be a die-hard NBA fan; however, if I was just a casual fan, I would probably not be that interested in the NBA playoffs right now. The system desperately needs to be tweaked.
