College Football Top 25 Free Picks: Week 14

Friday, December 4th, 2009

By Ron Jumper

Here is the final week of picks until bowl season, as we have the conference championship matchups and a few remaining Top 25 games to go. Thursday finally gave us the Pac-10 winner, as the Oregon Ducks survived their in-state rival Oregon State. The Ducks have a great season, which is surprising considering how atrocious they looked in their opener against Boise State. They even have LeGarrette Blount back in the mix, which should pay dividends in their Rose Bowl matchup with Ohio State. Even though USC is not in the Rose Bowl, I’m thinking Oregon can still carry the Big Ten whipping stick with into the BCS. Why mess with tradition?

We have been waiting for this Alabama-Florida showdown for weeks, yet I’m not sure if it will live up to the hype or not. Better yet, is it possible for it to live up to the hype? Has the hype made us lose sight of reality in this matchup? Only time will tell, but I have a strong feeling on what the outcome will be.

With this being it until bowl season, I’m hoping to put a cherry on top to a nice season of picks. For the record, go look around at similar services offering the same volume of picks or other sportswriters offering every top 25 pick against-the-spread and see how they stack up to yours truly. I think you’ll like the results.

College Football Top 25 Record:
127-118-5 ATS, 200-50 SU

Rutgers (-1.5) covers vs. West Virginia
The Mountaineers are only 1-3 on the road all season. Rutgers 27-21

Pittsburgh (+2) covers vs. Cincinnati
The Panthers spoil Bearcats’ title hopes, Dion Lewis has a big day. Pitt 31-21

East Carolina (+2.5) covers vs. Houston
Quietly, the Pirates have been playing great football and their defense is very good. ECU 28-23

New Mexico State (+48) covers vs. Boise State
This is just too many points, I don’t care who is playing. Boise State 44-7

USC (-7) covers vs. Arizona
The Trojans actually need this game to finish second in the Pac-10 and earn a Holiday Bowl berth, while the Wildcats are a little banged up. USC 27-17

Florida (-5.5) covers vs. Alabama
The Gators have been playing better and ARE BETTER so don’t overthink the loss of Carlos Dunlap or how tough Alabama’s defense is and so on. Tebow in a big game is money, if not because he is a very good college quarterback but we know any iffy calls will go their way. FLORIDA 31-21

California (-6) covers vs. Washington
These are two teams moving in opposite directions, as Cal is 5-1 in their last 6 and Washington is 1-4 in their last 5. Cal 38-24

Texas (-14.5) covers vs. Nebraska
Why mess with tradition? The Big 12 South destroys the Big 12 North in this game every year. Texas will put up points and Nebraska just can’t keep up. Also, with BCS implications on the line, there is no reason to think the Longhorns will be nice and let their foot off the gas pedal. Texas 38-17

Georgia Tech (pk) cover vs. Clemson
In the closest matchup on the board, these two will battle it out to the end with the Yellow Jackets being just a little bit better and more consistent. GT 34-24

College Football Top 25 Free Picks: Week 13

By Ron Jumper

This is the last full slate of college football games that I will pick. It has been a fun season and, as I was hoping would be the case, a profitable one as well thus far. Currently, I stand 11 games above .500 but I still have this week’s games to go plus the conference championships and bowl games after that. For this week, because of the holiday weekend, there are games scattered over Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There are also a lot of rivalry games, which should make for a great weekend of games to watch. I’m hoping so anyway, as the season has been dull the last few weeks. I feel like I’ve just been biding my time until the Alabama-Florida battle in the SEC Championship, maybe this week will peak my interest.

College Football Top 25 Record:
119-108-5 ATS, 189-43 SU

Texas A&M (+21) covers vs. Texas
The Aggies can put up points in bunches, Longhorns will have to show up. Texas 38-24

Cincinnati (-20) covers vs. Illinois
Simply put, this is a bad Fighting Illini team. Bearcats 48-14

Auburn (+10) covers vs. Alabama
Tigers have had the upper hand in this rivalry… Alabama 24-21

West Virginia (+1) covers vs. Pittsburgh
Mountaineers would love to spoil Panthers BCS hopes. WVU 34-31

Boise State (-13) covers vs. Nevada
Broncos have a real defense, Wolf Pack haven’t faced one of those in awhile… Boise State 58-34

North Carolina State (+5.5) covers vs. North Carolina
Tar Heels survive in-state rival in this one. UNC 31-28

Clemson (-3) covers vs. South Carolina
Gamecocks have a tradition of fading down the stretch. Tigers 34-21

Ole Miss (-7.5) covers vs. Mississippi State
Rebels destroy mediocre Bulldogs club. Ole Miss 38-14

Oklahoma State (+10) covers vs. Oklahoma
Sooners haven’t convinced me they are dependable. Cowboys 27-24

TCU (-44) covers vs. New Mexico
Simply put, the Lobos are this bad… Horned Frogs 63-7

Virginia Tech (-16) covers vs. Virginia
Cavs have been struggling as of late, Hokies need to finish strong. VT 47-17

Florida (-24) covers vs. Florida State
Tebow enjoys senior day in Gainesville. Florida 41-14

South Florida (+7) covers vs. Miami
Bulls defense harasses Jacory Harris. USF 23-20

BYU (-7.5) covers vs. Utah
Utes lacking solid QB play, Cougars have Max Hall… BYU 42-28

Arkansas (+3.5) covers vs. LSU
Hogs catch Tigers at the perfect time in this rivalry game. Arkansas 27-24

Houston (-29.5) covers vs. Rice
The Owls are just so bad, Case Keenum isn’t… Houston 62-24

Georgia Tech (-7) covers vs. Georgia
Yellow Jackets are the best team no one is talking about. GT 31-21

UCLA (+13) covers vs. USC
Where do the struggles end for the Trojans? USC 27-20

College Football Top 25 Free Picks: Week 12

By Ron Jumper

We are getting down to the end of the college season, with just a couple more weeks to go in the regular season. I’m hoping to finish strong and remain above .500 for the season. For this week, there are a lot of big spreads once again. Not very many heavyweight matchups, but that can be a good thing when picking the spread. Boring is good, it means what was supposed to happen actually happened. Granted, there are several rivalry games, so there just might be an upset or two on the horizon. You’ll have to read and see…

Boston College (-3.5) covers vs. North Carolina
Eagles perfect at home, need this win to stay in ACC race. BC 23-16

Ohio State (-10.5) covers vs. Michigan
Buckeyes keep Wolverines from reaching bowl eligibility. Ohio State 35-14

Iowa (-9.5) covers vs. Minnesota
Gophers struggled with South Dakota at home last week. Iowa 28-10

Florida (-44.5) covers vs. FIU
No reason to think Gators will play nice. Florida 56-7

Duke (+20) covers vs. Miami
Jacory Harris not being 100% will have an impact. Miami 31-20

Houston (-23.5) covers vs. Memphis
Cougars shred a bad Tiger defense. Houston 58-21

Wyoming (+31.5) covers vs. TCU
Cowboys deserve more respect than this at home. TCU 42-24

Northwestern (+7) covers vs. Wisconsin
The Badgers have always been night and day at home or away. NW 28-27

Penn State (-3) covers vs. Michigan State
Nittany Lions get a solid win on the road. Penn State 34-20

Ole Miss (-4.5) covers vs. LSU
Rebels catch LSU at a great time. Ole Miss 27-17

Virginia (+21.5) covers vs. Clemson
Cavaliers hang around and make it a close game. Clemson 31-21

Virginia Tech (-21) covers vs. NC State
Wolf Pack have struggled recently, Hokies haven’t. VT 48-17

Air Force (+10) covers vs. BYU
Falcons are demanding respect, expect a tight game. BYU 31-28

San Diego State (+20) covers vs. Utah
Utes still recovering from last week. Utah 24-13

Oregon State (-31) covers vs. Washington State
Beavers are playing great and will destroy Cougars. Oregon State 56-10

California (+7.5) covers vs. Stanford
Cal has been playing well, but haven’t had the same national spotlight as the Cardinal. Stanford 28-24

Kansas State (+16.5) covers vs. Nebraska
This should be a hard fought game that helps decide the Big 12 North. Nebraska 20-16
